Instagram Highlights from a Week on the Road

For a week of nothing but sun, sea, good food, and visiting old friends, my brother and I hit the road southbound from Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles. Jumping on the Pacific Coast Highway in San Francisco, our loose schedule allowed for a lot of off-trail adventures and great stories along the way. Here are a few Instagram highlights from our California road trip, photo diaries of the trip are soon to come!

Whether driving through the night from Portland to San Francisco was a genius idea or viably insane, N and I first stopped in Marin Headlands for a foggy, lesser known view of the Golden Gate Bridge, the city skyline, and the beautiful cliffs below.

While playing navigator in San Francisco, N decided that it would be hilarious to slyly redirect me down San Francisco's famous Lombard Street. You know, that steep one with eight hairpin turns? It's pretty touristy but also one of the most fun roads to drive down.

No stop in San Francisco would have been complete without a stop at City Lights Bookstore. As a huge American lit nerd, I was practically drooling over the history (this was the place for the Beat movement) and how many famous writers and poets have passed through City Lights. Of course, I had to buy a Kerouac book and of course it was Big Sur to read on the third leg of the road trip.

Our first stretch on the Pacific Coast Highway landed us in Santa Cruz for the night. N and I met up with one of my best friends who lives in town and the trio of us meandered along the boardwalk for a little rest and relaxation.

Big Sur has been on the top of my list of places to travel for a while now and it did not disappoint. On the third leg of our road trip, N and I hiked, explored, and camped in Pfieffer Big Sur and Julia Pfieffer state parks. Every turn on the Pacific Coast Highway along Big Sur is absolutely stunning. I can't wait to go back and camp for longer.

Out of Big Sur we stopped in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara (pictured above) along the way. RIP guitar that fell out of the car and is now in the dumpster in Santa Barbara.

After hanging around Santa Monica, we met up with N's friends for a tour de Los Angeles.

When the opportunity presented itself to crash on the beach for half a day in Southern California, we happily switched up our plans and headed to Hermosa Beach. We hung out with N's good friends and ate the best burritos of all time. It was the perfect way to end our time in Southern California before hitting the road again.
